Welcome to Crystal Lake
Enfield, NH
There is something special about this place. Crystal Lake has a way of bringing peace, joy, and a sense that the world has gently slowed down. Tucked into Enfield, New Hampshire, Crystal Lake spans 401 acres — stretching approximately 1.6 miles long and .7 miles wide — with waters reaching 50 feet deep near Oliver Island. Fed by the clear waters of Bicknell Brook, the lake lives up to its name, reflecting sky and seasons with quiet grace.
Here, little moments make a big difference. Early morning mist rising off the water. The familiar call of loons returning each spring. Friends gathering at the sandbar. Neighbors waving from pontoon boats on an evening cruise. Crystal Lake is both peaceful and alive.
Anglers enjoy cold- and warm-water fishing for trout, bass, and pickerel. Families water ski, tube, kayak, and paddle board across its open stretches. On calm mornings, a hearty group of swimmers gathers to venture to the island together and crew shells glide quietly across the surface. In summer, laughter echoes from docks and boats; in winter, neighbors check ice thickness and wager on the long-awaited “ice out.”
The Fourth of July brings a beloved boat parade. The return of nesting loons is watched with care and anticipation. At times, a bald eagle can be seen soaring above the lake before settling onto the trees of Oliver Island. Generations of families have gathered here — some for five generations — and yet Crystal Lake continues to welcome new friendships and new memories.
The Crystal Lake Improvement Association (CLIA) works to preserve the natural beauty and water quality of the lake, hosting annual picnics, dinner cruises, and community gatherings — including winter outings such as attending a Dartmouth Big Green men’s ice hockey game together. CLIA also helps protect the lake by monitoring the public boat launch for invasive plants and maintaining the traditions that make this community special.
Beyond the shoreline, the beauty continues. Bicknell Brook offers a tranquil woodland walk along its banks all the way to the shore of the lake. A short drive brings hikers to Mount Cardigan, where on a clear day the Presidential Range stretches across the horizon in the White Mountains. In winter, Whaleback Mountain offers nearby skiing, while Ragged Mountain and Mount Sunapee are both within about forty minutes.
Historic Shaker Village, just minutes away, hosts musical performances, lectures, and museum exhibits. Nearby Hanover is home to the distinguished Dartmouth College, one of the nation’s prestigious Ivy League institutions. The college brings intellectual vitality, cultural events, and athletic traditions to the region, while the renowned Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center provides world-class medical care.
But what truly defines Crystal Lake cannot be measured in acres or depth.
It lives in quiet mornings when the water is still and the loons call across the lake.
It lives in laughter shared on docks and boats, in old traditions carried forward, and in new friendships that begin here each summer.
For generations, Crystal Lake has been a place to return to — a place where the world slows down and the moments that matter most come into focus.
