Lake News - September
Hello Crystal Lake!
September is becoming my favorite month of the year. This weather has been amazing and the sunsets spectacular! I have a couple of updates and an interesting/concerning article I'd like to share with everyone.
First off, what is going on with our water-levels?
Well, the "extreme drought" for our area continues and is expanding. The NH Dam Bureau is continuing to do its best in managing the "Pass Thru" process and supplying the city of Lebanon with water. I spoke with them today and here is what they had to say... The "Pass Thru" of water from Grafton Pond to Macoma will continue for about another ten to fourteen days. During this period we may experience further increases in water level or slight decreases in the level. When they have taken everything possible out of Grafton Pond they will put their boards back in and plan to put the Crystal Lake boards back in also. Any further water requirements for Lebanon will be taken from Lake Mascoma. Having said that, they will need to reassess things and determine if additional water will be required from Crystal. My plan is to call them back in ten days for an update which I will pass along.
Next, I'd like to draw your attention to a very interesting article (attached) which was published in the Boston Globe this week.
I am not sending this out not to scare anyone, but I do believe we all need to have a realistic view of future possibilities. The detrimental effects of inaction related to lake protection are not pretty. This article highlights real NH cases of lakes that have not been properly cared for, the outcome, and the prohibitively expensive and controversial remediation. (If you are reading this note on FB, sorry but articles can not be attached. Among the tools in our toolbox to be proactive in Crystal Lake protection is the Lake Smart program.
Hats off to everyone who has received their Lake Smart award, everyone currently going through the process, and to Shirley Green for leading our efforts! It's fun watching more and more Lake Smart award signs pop up around the community. A quick note from Shirley:
"This is so exciting! The Lake Smart Property Tour has 15 properties being visited today (9/18)! Yay! Crystal Lake! I will be scheduling another Lake Smart Property Tour in October. Please contact me at shirley.a.green@comcast.net to be added to the list."
That's it for now. Any questions, compliments, or comments please don't hesitate to get in touch with me. Any complaints... call Bill!

Dan
